Applying for a LAGERS retirement benefit is easy! Below is your step by step guide through the LAGERS retirement process!

Before you initiate your retirement application process, here are few things to think about:

Are you eligible to retire?

In order to be eligible for a LAGERS retirement benefit, you must be vested with LAGERS and have reached your normal, early, or Rule of 80 (if applicable) retirement age.

 Have you received a LAGERS benefit estimate?

Although it is not mandatory that you receive a personalized benefit estimate prior to retirement, it is highly recommended that you do so. This estimate will give you an idea of what your monthly LAGERS benefit will be along with your specific payment options. It may also help you determine if you are financially prepared to retire. You may obtain your free estimate by contacting our office or logging on the myLAGERS member web portal.

 When would you like to begin your retirement?

You must submit your application for retirement 30-90 days prior to when you want to start receiving your monthly benefit. Your monthly benefit will be paid on the first business day of each month.

Applying for Your Retirement

Step 1: Complete & Submit Your Application for Retirement

In order to initiate the retirement process, you will need to complete the Application for Retirement Form (LRS-8) or use the simple step-by-step guide on the myLAGERS web portal. You can obtain the paper form either from your employer or online. Please submit the following to our office:



Baptismal Certificate, School or College Record, Military Discharge Paper (DD Form 214), Passport

Step 2: Select a Payment Option

Upon receipt of your application, a LAGERS benefit specialist will verify your wage and employment information with your employer and then calculate your individual benefit payable under each Payment Option.

Approximately 2-3 weeks before your retirement date, you will receive your customized Retirement Options Packet. Once you receive this packet, please submit the following back to our office:


  • Election of Allowance Option Form (LRS-9)
  • Missouri & Federal Tax Withholding Form (MO-W-4P & W-4P)
  • Direct Deposit Form (LRS-6, optional)
  • If you elect Option A OR B, please also submit:
  • Copy of your Spouse’s Birth Certificate
  • Copy of your Marriage License

Following the effective date of your retirement, you will begin receiving your LAGERS benefit on or about the first day of the month.  If you choose to direct deposit, you will receive a check stub for your first payment.
