Applying For Your Benefit is Easier Than You Think

Jeff Pabst, CRC

One of the most common questions that many pre-retirees have for us at LAGERS is, “how much notice do I need to give LAGERS of my retirement?” I have had some attendees at our seminars expect it to be six months or more. While I know the excitement of retirement may make you want to apply for retirement a year in advance, LAGERS will need notification only 30 days before you retire.

That’s right! Your LAGERS retirement application must be submitted only 30 days from when you would like to receive your first payment. LAGERS pays monthly benefits on the first of the month. For example, if you would like to apply for a January 1st retirement benefit, we will need your application no later than December 2nd. But, if you are really excited to retire and want to get your paperwork in early, we will accept your application up to 90 days prior from when you would like to receive your first payment.

Your application can be done by either completing the paper application for retirement form or online through your myLAGERS member portal. When completing your application, you will need to provide a photocopy of your birth certificate (a certified copy is not required). When applying using the paper form, you will simply attach the copy with your application that you send to the LAGERS office. However, if you apply online, you will receive an email with instructions of how to send the copy of your birth certificate to our office.
