FAQs about Working After Retirement
Q: What options do LAGERS members have for re-employment after retirement?
A: There three options for re-employment after retirement under LAGERS
1. A LAGERS retiree may work full time or part time for any private or non-LAGERS employer and continue to receive his or her monthly benefit.
2. A LAGERS retiree may work part time for an employer from which she is drawing a benefit and continue to receive her monthly benefit. Part time is defined as less than the "Annual Hours Required for Coverage" that is elected by each employer. If the retiree begins to work the Annual Hours Required for Coverage, the monthly benefit would be suspended and the retiree would again become an active member of LAGERS and eligible to accrue an additional retirement benefit.
3. A LAGERS retiree may work full time for a different LAGERS employer from which he is receiving a benefit and still receive his monthly benefit. Before the retiree may re-employ with a different LAGERS employer, he must have a one month break in service. Once the retiree has been re-employed for 12 consecutive months, he would be vested and eligible for an additional monthly benefit upon his second retirement.
Q: Why can't a LAGERS retiree re-employ full time with the same LAGERS employer and continue to receive her monthly retirement benefit?
A:
This would allow the retiree to receive a monthly retirement benefit at the same time she is earning a full time salary, both from the same employer. In essence, this would allow the employee to retire from LAGERS without actually retiring. This is currently not an option under LAGERS statutes.
